Summary of Upgrade Features and Changes to Accordance in Each Version
Version 4.0 July 1997
Search window
• Equal sign in front of the word allows searching for exact forms in Roman Bible texts. Newly formatted texts distinguish capitalized and all caps words, and those with accents or punctuation such as hyphens and apostrophes. Older text modules have limited exact capability.
• Some Bible texts include styling (such as italics and “small caps”), and poetry designated by short indented lines with a further indent when the text wraps around.
• New options for displaying the verse reference of Bible texts. Another option displays actual book names in non-English Bible texts (newly formatted).
• Paragraph markers are suppressed in Continuous display of verses.
• Book name window (Options menu) shows the listing of all of the books in a Bible text, useful if the Bible text has actual as well as English book names.
• An “option-dash” (as well as a hyphen) can now be used to indicate verse ranges.
• “From text” pop-up menus on the Select word and other dialog boxes shows only the valid texts appropriate to that word list.
• In the argument entry box the font size of Hebrew and Greek was increased.
Keyed Bible texts
Certain texts now allow search and display of Key numbers (such as Strong’s number). The following features are supported in these texts:
• “Instant details” window displays the details of the Key numbers: the English word, the Key number, the original dictionary form (in Greek or Hebrew), and the transliterated form of the original dictionary form.
• Supports multiple Key numbers (up to three Key numbers per word).
• Analysis, Parsing, and Syntax windows show Key number details.
• Holding the option key down while clicking Search or amplifying to a Bible text, places the Key numbers from the selection in the argument entry box and performs the search.
• Amplifying from a text with Key numbers to a Greek or Hebrew lexicon with Key numbers will go to the corresponding Key number (of the same language).
• Searching for a Key number by use of the [KEY ] command, expects a Key number beginning with “G” (Greek) or “H” (Hebrew) enclosed in brackets.
• “Enter Key Numbers…” menu item displays the list of Key numbers for entry into the Search window, along with the transliterated dictionary form.
• “@” sign used to join a Key number and a word together.
• Simple Construct window includes the items “AGREE” and “KEY”, so that construct searches can be done with Key numbers.
New Window floating palette
• The New Window palette has been extended and reorganized. Its new default position is the top left of the screen, under the menu bar.
• Ten permanent buttons are pop-up menus which open a new window for Bible texts, Map backgrounds, parallel modules, User Notes, five categories of tools, Tool sets.
• The eleventh button labeled Add pane: adds the selected text as a new pane to the front Search, Text, or Reference List window.
Amplify features
• Tools – A triple-click on a word in any text or tool pane will automatically amplify to the first lexicon of the correct language. Triple-clicking on a verse reference in a text pane amplifies to the first Reference tool.
• Diagram – The maximum number of verses that can be copied to the diagram window was increased from 20 to 60, and the window size was increased.
• Speak – The command key -9 was added to the amplify Speak item to allow keyboard access.
• Search All window now shows the number of "hits" in each module.
• The lists of texts and tools are now alphabetized in the Define Groups dialog box.
• The Define Groups…. and Define Tool Sets… items were added to the submenus in the Amplify menu.
• Amplify now allowed from a selection in an Analysis, Table, or Parsing window, to Bible text, tool, or Search All. Selection of a Key number will amplify to a Keyed text or lexicon with Key numbers.
Tools window
Categories
• Tools pop-up menus are now always subdivided into the tool categories:
• Separate Tool windows must be opened for each category of tool, and the tool pop-up menu shows only tools in the same category.
• The Set Preferences dialog box no longer has an option to choose the initial tool settings used when opening up a new tools window from the File menu. The default tool is now the first Reference tool.
Show Pop-up Menu replaces the Show all text checkbox, and offers All Text, Paragraphs, and Articles.
• Pressing command-comma toggles the text pane display between the three items in the pop-up menu.
Browser
• The width of the browser pane varies with the position of the cursor, wider when the cursor is over the pane, and some of the text is hidden, and narrower when the cursor leaves the browser. Adjusting the section divider resets both widths as long as the window is open.
• Holding the option key down while opening a browser section, scrolls the browser and opens.all levels to show the current paragraph.
Picture Thumbnails
• An optional “thumbnail” image now appears beside the reference to an image of a picture, chart or map.
• Clicking on the reference or the thumbnail opens the Display window with the full image.
• The Picture pop-up menu in the tool display dialog box sets the display of the thumbnail images.
Advanced Searching in Tools
• The CONTENTS command can be used to link a Reference tool such as a commentary to the verse list in a Search window. Tools window then shows as “hits” only articles relating to the verses showing in the Search window as well as matching other search criteria.
• The MERGE command is unique to the Tools window, and has two different functions – to allow searching of two fields in the same tool, and to import both the contents and the search argument from a Bible text to a Refeerence tool.
Other Windows
Instant Details Window
• Reshaped with the drag bar on the left.
• Added font size button
• Used for transliteration, Key numbers, map altitude, etc.
Construct Window
• The KEY and AGREE items were added to the Simple Constuct window.
• Negative columns are allowed between positive elements, and not just at the beginning and end, with limited connections to the other elements.
Bible Atlas Map Window
• Double-clicking on a name on the map automatically amplifies to the first English dictionary
• The Instant Details window displays the elevation of the point under the cursor, as well as its coordinates. (Accordance must be able to “find” Altitude data.) When distances are measured, these are shown first.
• Pressing the command key changes the cursor to a grab hand which scrolls the window by dragging
Edit Window for User Notes
• Selecting Save or clicking the Update button updates notes file without closing the Edit window.
General
• If new modules are added to Accordance using the Installer, they are now also added to the pop-up menus.
• New modules are displayed using the default preferences of the first English Bible or first Reference tool.
• Default text colors for searchable windows are now red for hits and blue for hypertext links.
• Optional Drag and Drop text capability lets you drag to move text, or copy it to another window, to export with the same options as the clipboard, and to import text, where allowed.
• Pasting is allowed in the reference box at the lower right of Search and Tool windows.
• The maximum number of verses or paragraphs that can be copied to the clipboard (or Drag and Drop) was increased from 150 to 500.
• The new Navigation services now implemented for opening and saving windows, when they are present in the system (8.5 and above, or an extension). The Add modules dialog box no longer reappears when you select more than one module to add at once.
• When re-opening saved windows they recall and scroll to the contents that were viewed when the window was saved.
• The Define Range… (or Group or Tool Set) menu item was moved from the Edit to the Options menu.
• The Edit Modules dialog box has a title, and allows alphabetization of each list. Tools have separate lists selected by a pop-up menu. Floating windows no longer need to be closed to open this dialog box.
• The modules in the Search All–Define Group dialog box are arranged alphabetically.
• Print Selection can now be used for map, picture, diagram, and 3D windows.
• Command J (-J) opens the Select words dialog box.
• Command spacing grave (-`) closes all windows.
Greek and Hebrew
Exact Searching -- newly formatted texts only
• The exact search option described above is also implemented for the Greek and Hebrew texts.
• The lexical and inflected word lists show all the accented and vowelled forms of each word. In addition, lemmas in the HMT have been numbered with _0 for Aramaic, and _1, _2, etc. for homographs.
• As before, a simple consonantal search ignores the vowels, numbers, accents, and breathing marks.
• Adding the number labels to the Hebrew lemma constrains the search to the lemmas with that number, but still ignores the vowel points.
• When the equal sign (=) is added immediately before a word, Accordance searches for that exact lexical or inflected form. In Greek this includes the capitalization, accents, and breathing marks. In Hebrew it includes the vowel points and dagesh, and the lemma numbers.
• Wildcards are allowed with exact searches. In an exact search, the character wildcard (?) stands for any letter, accent, breathing mark, vowel or dagesh.
• Font size increased in argument entry box to show accents/vowel points. s
Other Search Changes
• Hebrew suffixes display a gloss in the Instant Details and Parsing windows.
• When searching a tagged text with *, only the words that have lemmas will be selected, instead of all words as before. The entry "*" will still find all words.
Export Options
• A new Greek & Hebrew pane in the Set preferences dialog box controls the export of text from Accordance, whether by copying, dragging, or saving as text. Options inlude stripping accents/vowels, different fonts and transliterations, and Hebrew WorldScript™.
Text Entry
The General pane of the Set Preferences dialog box includes the following new options:.
• "Smart" entry of ending forms, accents, breathing marks and vowel points.
• Israeli keyboard layout for Hebrew entry.
Transliteration Display
• The Instant Details box now displays a “transliteration” or English transcription in a simple Geneva font, for any Greek or Hebrew word under the cursor (in any non-tagged Greek or Hebrew Bible text or any tool).
• For tagged Greek and Hebrew texts, both the Instant Details box and the Parsing window have the option of showing the inflected and lexical forms “transliterated” into English.

• The command key for the “Mode” button in the Search window was changed from command-/ (slash) to command-, (comma) because in System 8.5 the command-/ activates the “on-line” help.
• Analysis – An addtional Count pop-up menu in the Set analysis display dialog box lets you choose the statistical method by which each word is counted: Number, Frequency, Uniqueness, Importance or None. Also counts the number of forms.
• The Tool Set pop-up menu in the Amplify palette lets you select and group individual tools and open or amplify to the set.
Includes an automatic tiling option for Reference tools in the set.
• Page numbers can be included when printing.
• Search All – The Define Groups…. item was added to the pop-up menu in the Amplify palette.
• The decimal point (.) is now allowed in place of a colon (:) when entering verse references for any text. This is also an option for the display of verse references in a Bible text.
• When re-opening saved windows (Search, Tool, Reference, Text, User Notes, and Parallel) they recall and scroll to the contents that were viewed when the window was saved.
• The page up, page down, home, and end keys are now supported for scrolling in text panes.
• The [LINK] command for tool windows allows linking between an English language field and a transliteration field.
• The count of hits takes priority over the verse count when the window pane is too narrow to show both counts.
• Default text colors for text, tools, and user notes windows are now red for hits and blue for hypertext links.
• The Hebrew verb tag names “jussive” and “cohortative” were changed to “apocopated” and “cohortativeHeh” respectively. The “hithpaal” stem in the Hebrew verb tag dialog popup now appears after the “hithaphel” stem.
• Hebrew suffixes display a gloss in the Instant Details and Parsing windows.

General features – Major Enhancements
• Search All option to search all installed modules or a user-defined group of modules in English, Greek, or Hebrew for words, phrases or verse references. Clicking on a name in the browser list of “hit” modules, articles and chapters opens a window displaying the results in that module.
• Diagram and Syntax windows allow the user to create grammatical diagrams and spreadsheets of selected text.
• New floating palette to open new search, tools, parallel, and construct windows of a specific kind, or add a new pane to the front search or text window.
• Font size buttons on each text pane to quickly change the text size.
General features – Minor Enhancements
• Parallel window allows simultaneous scrolling of panes by holding down the option key.
• “White” option added to color menus.
• Smart quotes now optional for Edit windows.
• Options to suppress some informational dialog boxes.
• Option to insert a colon in a verse reference when this is suggested by an error message.
• During a long search (when the progress bar appears) the user can go to another application.
• Copy To Clipboard button added to the About The Text dialog box to facilitate citation of text and copyright information.
• Save and Save As… now conform to Macintosh convention.
Tools and Amplify – Major Enhancements
• Browser pane displays the sections, articles and subarticles in the tool. It allows the user to see the context of the paragraph currently viewed, and to go to another article.
• Instant Details box replaces the Parsing box. It now also displays details of many hypertextable items in tools such as abbreviations, bibliography, section headings. The box is now growable and has a font size preference.
• Enhanced amplifying allows the user to select words in any text or tool, and hypertext to any text or tool containing the same language.
• Tools now can include pictures, maps, and tables.
Tools and Amplify – Minor Enhancements
• New Amplify options include Diagram, Syntax, Search All, and Bible text buttons
• A new pane to the Set Preferences… menu item lets the user choose which buttons appear in the Amplify palette, and color-code the pop-up menu buttons.
• The Amplify menu is reorganized by grouping similar items in submenus.
• Selecting or clicking and amplifying from a verse reference in a Bible text to a Reference tool or Bible text opens that module to the same verse. Amplifying from a verse reference in a Bible text to any other tool searches the tool for that verse reference (in the Scripture field). (This is a change from version 2.1, when amplifying to a reference tool from anywhere in a Bible verse (text or reference) always opened the tool to that verse. Now, if the selection is in the text, the text of the Reference tool is searched for the selection.) Clicking on a verse reference in a tool hypertexts to a text window as before.
• Simplified amplifying from selected text to all texts and tools. For most texts and tools the selected words and phrases are searched for in the same form as in the selections, with the following exceptions:
a. Amplify from a tagged text to a tagged text: use the lemma forms for words and phrases.
b. Amplify from a tagged text to a non-tagged text: use the inflected forms for words and phrases.
c. Amplify from a tagged text to a tool: use the lemma forms for all words, but break phrases up into a list of lemmas.
d. Amplify from a non-tagged text to a tagged text: search for the inflected forms (add quotation marks) for words and phrases.
e. Amplify from a tool to a tagged text: use the lemma search for a single word (e.g. a lexicon entry), but use the inflected search (add quotation marks) for phrases (e.g. a citation in the lexicon). If a single word lemma search is not successful, then attempt the search again by searching the same word as an inflected search (add quotation marks).
• Simplified the response to amplifying to tools, parallels, user notes, and Bible texts from a selection, when the item cannot be found. Windows are opened only if there are results to display, and a single message appears with the “All…” option when no “hits” are found in any of the texts.
• When opening up a Text window from the Context button on the Amplify palette, all of the panes of the Search window from which the context came are now shown. The window now scrolls down one verse.
• The popup menus on the floating windows now appear as regular pop-up menus when clicked on by the mouse. This allows scrolling of long lists of items and is easier to see and point to.
Installation - Addition of modules
• The Install New Text… item was moved from the File menu to the Edit menu and changed to Add Module…. After selecting the first new text, the dialog opens again to allow immediate selection of another text.
• If the English gloss files are in the same folder as the application, they will be automatically added when starting the program, if a respective Greek or Hebrew text has already been added. The Gloss files can now be added by use of the Open… item in the File menu.
• The Edit Install item in the Edit menu was changed to Edit Modules.
• When using the Edit Modules item and its submenus in the Edit menu, all open windows will now be automatically closed (after a warning dialog), before proceeding to the Edit Modules dialog box.
Construct
• The Greek and Hebrew construct search now allows AGREE to be used between a negative term at the beginning or end of the construct with its adjacent word. (That is, the word will be excluded only if it agrees with the adjacent word.) This is useful for easily finding anarthrous noun constructs.
• New option-drag feature allows duplication of individual items within a Construct window. This feature is also supported in the Diagram window.
• Dragging (and subsequent copying) of individual items from one Construct window to another Construct window (of the same kind) is now allowed. This feature is also supported in the Diagram window.

• Search and display the Septuagint with all of the features already available for the Greek New Testament, with full parallel display of the contents of other versions despite discrepancies in verse numbering.

• Search and display the Hebrew Masoretic Text with all of the features already available for the Greek New Testament.
• Preserve font and style information as you export Hebrew, Greek and English text via the clipboard or as text files, and reverse Hebrew for use in an English word processor.
• Mode button in the search entry box allows you to toggle between the entry of search criteria and the entry of verse references without using the field pop-up menu.
• In Verse references mode, the asterisk (*) represents all verses in a text. When this is the default mode and a new window is opened, the asterisk will be inserted automatically to cause all verses in the default text to be displayed.
• Search window display now includes the number of hits.
• Set color options for the text panes and context windows, for display and for printing. You can highlight the hits with color, with or without boldfacing.
• The new “Amplify” palette lets you choose any amplify feature with a click of the mouse. It can also display an instant parse of any Greek or Hebrew word under the mouse.
• Other new amplify features include automatic searching of the selected words in a search window, the option to parse only the search hits in a selection, the option of displaying the total words in a book or chapter in the Table window, and the ability to get the context of a single missing verse in a text. The counts in the Table window are now more accurate.
• When you define ranges you can now move a range definition up or down the list, and put spaces before a name in order to group ranges together.
• Accordance handles scrambled or missing verses and chapters more effectively so that parallel text is correctly matched, such as between the NAB and KJV.
• If a verse or chapter reference is invalid, the nearest verse is shown. For example, if a chapter does not contain a verse, then the last verse in the chapter will be shown.
• The dash character now delimits a clause in a sentence (previously it was ignored).
• The vocabulary list in the construct window now recalls the last text used in that window.
• The maximum number of verses which can be copied to the clipboard is increased to 150.
• In any Save window dialog box you can use the following keyboard equivalents:
Don’t Save: press d or n
Cancel: press escape or Command-period
Save: press return, enter, or y.
• When the LINK command is used and there is only one window available to link, the LINK command is now automatically inserted with the name of that one window.
